How Tire QR Registration Works

Tire registration differs from most product registration because tires are typically installed by a shop rather than directly by the owner. The shop scans the tire's DOT number or a QR code on the label during installation, which populates the owner's contact information from the installation record to complete registration automatically. Tire brands including Michelin, Bridgestone, Continental, and Goodyear have online registration portals where owners can also register manually using the tire's DOT number, which is molded into the sidewall. The DOT number encodes the manufacturer, plant, and date of manufacture and is the key identifier for recall tracking.

NHTSA Tire Recalls and Why Registration Matters

NHTSA administers tire recalls in the United States, separate from the CPSC. When a tire recall is issued, the tire manufacturer is required to notify registered owners by mail. Owners who registered their tires at the time of installation receive a written notice explaining the defect, the hazard, and the remedy. Unregistered tire owners have no direct notification path. They may encounter a recall notice at their next scheduled service, or they may never learn about the recall at all. Driving on recalled tires with a tread separation or belt failure hazard is a significant safety risk that registration is specifically designed to prevent.

The DOT Number as the Registration Key

Every tire sold in the United States has a DOT number molded into the inner sidewall. This number uniquely identifies the tire's manufacturer, production plant, tire line, and week and year of manufacture. For recall purposes, the DOT number determines whether a specific tire falls within an affected production range. Registering with the full DOT number ensures that recall matching is precise, preventing both missed alerts and false alerts for tires outside the affected production window.

Installer-Initiated Registration Programs

Major tire retailers including Discount Tire, Costco Tire, and Firestone Auto Care register tires on behalf of customers as part of the installation process. The customer's contact information from the purchase is combined with the tire DOT numbers from the installation to create a complete registration record. For independent tire shops, digital work order systems that capture DOT numbers can be integrated with tire manufacturer registration APIs to trigger auto-registration at the completion of the installation, eliminating the need for the customer to take any separate action.
