Tire Registration Guide for Millennials

Tires don't come with a registration card at checkout. But your DOT number is the key to recall notices, mileage warranty claims, and road hazard protection.

Why Most Millennials Don't Register Tires

Millennials buy tires online (Tire Rack, Discount Tire Direct, Amazon Warehouse) or at discount retailers, and the registration step rarely surfaces in those purchase flows. Unlike most consumer products, tires don't come with a registration card in the box - the process requires recording the DOT number from the sidewall. The result: most millennial drivers have no tire registration on file. When a tire recall occurs - and they do, regularly - there is no direct notification path. The driver may never know their tires were recalled.

Understanding Your DOT Number

The DOT number on your tire sidewall is your primary registration identifier. It begins with 'DOT' followed by two-letter plant code, two-letter size code, and a four-digit date code: the week and year of manufacture. For example, DOT U2LL LMLR 5119 means the tire was made in week 51 of 2019. The full DOT number is used for recall lookups and warranty registration. Only the last 11 characters are typically needed for registration (the plant code through the date code).
Your DOT number is your tire's identity - record all four from the sidewalls and register at nhtsa.gov or the tire brand site.

NHTSA Tire Registration Guidance

Tire Recalls and NHTSA Notification

NHTSA (not just CPSC) is the primary tire recall authority. Major tire recalls have affected millions of tires - the Firestone recall in 2000, Goodyear G159 RV tire recalls, and numerous recent recalls for tread separation and bead failure. NHTSA maintains a tire recall database at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Registered tire owners receive direct mail notice. Unregistered owners are only notified if they happen to check the database or see news coverage.

Your Tires, Registered and Protected

The DOT number is your registration key - five minutes of recording and submitting protects your mileage warranty and recall notification.

Mileage Warranty and Road Hazard Coverage

Premium tire brands offer mileage warranties - Michelin Defender T+H covers 80,000 miles, Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady covers 60,000 miles. These warranties require the original purchase receipt and proof of registration for claims. Road hazard coverage is typically a retailer add-on (Discount Tire, Costco, Sam's Club) rather than a manufacturer warranty. If you purchased road hazard coverage, keep the plan documentation - it is typically tied to your purchase record at the retailer.

How Bawte Makes It Simple

NHTSA Recall Registration

Register tires at nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/tires using your DOT number. NHTSA issues tire recalls separately from CPSC.

DOT Number Documentation

Record all four DOT numbers from your tire sidewalls - they may differ between tires. Keep them with your vehicle documents.

Annual Recall Check

Check nhtsa.gov/recalls for your tire brand and model each year - especially before long trips or at tire rotation time.

Mileage Warranty Documentation

Mileage warranty claims require original purchase receipt and proof of registration. Keep both accessible for the life of the tires.

Key Takeaways

1
Record the DOT number from all four tire sidewalls - they may differ between tires on the same vehicle
2
Register at nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/tires or the tire brand's website for recall notification
3
Michelin offers 80,000-mile warranty and Goodyear offers 60,000-mile warranty - both require purchase documentation
