Serial Number Locations by Mower Type

Mower serial numbers are printed on metal tags or adhesive stickers that are often placed in locations protected from grass, debris, and weather. Use a flashlight and phone camera to read tags in low-visibility locations.

• Push mowers (walk-behind): Rear of the mower housing near the handle attachment, frame rail near the engine, or underside of the deck near the rear wheels
• Self-propelled mowers: Same as push mowers - rear housing or frame rail
• Riding mowers (Tractor-style): Under the seat, on the frame rail below the operator area, or on the engine housing
• Zero-turn mowers: Main frame near the left rear wheel, under the seat deck, or on the engine housing
• Robotic mowers: Underside of the cutting deck or in the battery compartment

Brand-Specific Locations

John Deere: the model and serial number are on a yellow/green tag on the frame, typically visible from the left side of the mower near the engine. Husqvarna: serial sticker on the rear of the mower housing or inside the engine cover. Toro: metal tag on the frame near the deck or on the upper engine housing. Cub Cadet: under the seat on the frame or on the right side of the engine housing. Honda walk-behind: rear of the housing near the self-propel lever.

Engine vs. Mower Serial Number

Many mowers use a separate engine from a different manufacturer (Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Kawasaki, Honda). The engine has its own serial number on the engine block, separate from the mower's serial number. For mower registration, use the mower serial number. For engine warranty claims specifically, you may need the engine serial number - it is typically stamped directly on the engine block near the air filter or oil fill cap.
