Why Gift Registration Must Be in the Recipient's Name

When a laptop is registered in the gift-giver's name, warranty communications go to the wrong household. If Apple, Dell, or HP issues a safety notice or recalls a power adapter, the notification arrives at the giver's address -- not yours. For a device you use daily and depend on for work, this is a meaningful gap in protection.

What You Need From the Gift-Giver

To register a gifted laptop, you need the purchase date. For most brands, this is the only piece of information from the gift-giver that registration requires -- the serial number comes from the laptop itself, and your contact information is your own. Ask the gift-giver for the purchase receipt or simply the purchase date (month and year) so you can complete registration accurately. For Apple products, the gift-giver should not have activated the device or linked it to their Apple ID. If they did, an Apple ID transfer process is required before you can register.

Where to Find the Laptop's Serial Number

Laptop serial numbers are found on a sticker on the bottom of the device, inside the Settings (on Windows: Settings > System > About; on Mac: Apple Menu > About This Mac), and sometimes on the original box. For warranty registration purposes, the serial number from Settings or the bottom sticker is identical -- use whichever is more convenient.
