Using the embedded portal instead of navigating to a brand website is typically faster and less error-prone. The portal reads the serial number directly from the hardware and submits it with your account information.

On a Mac, your Apple ID serves as the registration mechanism. Sign in with your Apple ID during initial setup and the MacBook registers automatically. Verify at supportprofile.apple.com - your MacBook should appear under 'My Devices' with warranty status. On Windows laptops, the embedded app varies by manufacturer. Dell SupportAssist shows the Service Tag and warranty expiration on the home screen. HP Support Assistant shows warranty status under 'My Devices.' Lenovo Vantage shows warranty status under 'Device' → 'Warranty Information.'

When the Portal Shows Unregistered

If the embedded portal shows warranty status as 'Not Registered' or does not display a warranty expiration date, manual registration via the brand's support site is the next step. This can happen when a laptop is purchased from a gray market seller, when the initial setup was completed without a Microsoft or Apple account, or when the machine was refurbished. Manual registration requires the serial number (found on the bottom of the laptop, in System Information on Windows, or in About This Mac on macOS) and the purchase date.
