Serial Numbers on Major Home Appliances

Major appliances have serial numbers on durable labels that typically survive for the life of the product. Refrigerators have the serial number on a label inside the fresh food compartment, usually on the upper left wall or ceiling. Dishwashers have it on the door frame, visible when the door is open. Washers and dryers have it on the back panel or on a label on the interior of the door opening. Gas ranges and ovens have the serial number on a label inside the oven compartment door frame or behind the oven drawer at the base. Water heaters have it on a label wrapped around the upper portion of the tank. For any appliance where the label is not immediately visible, the owner's manual often lists the exact location.

Serial Numbers on Power Tools

Power tool serial numbers are on labels near the motor housing or on stickers on the body of the tool. For older tools, these labels may have faded or partially detached. If the label is unreadable, the receipt or original warranty registration card (if kept) may have the serial number. For cordless tools, the battery pack has its own serial number independent of the tool. If the battery is the component with a recall, only the battery serial matters. Inspecting both the tool body and the battery pack for readable serial number labels is the first step.

Documenting Serial Numbers for Future Use

Baby boomers who have owned products for many years and want to create a comprehensive product record can do so by spending a morning going through the home and photographing every accessible serial number label. The photos are stored in a named album on a phone or tablet, creating a permanent reference. For products in difficult-to-access locations, a shared note with a family member ensures the documentation is accessible even if one person cannot reach the label. Home inventories created for insurance purposes also benefit from including serial numbers for major products.

When the Serial Number Is Unreadable

For labels that have faded beyond readability, several options remain. Contacting the brand with the model number and approximate purchase year sometimes allows them to access production records that help identify the unit. For appliances installed by a contractor, the installation records may include the serial number. For situations where the serial number genuinely cannot be recovered, registering with the model number and purchase year still creates a record for future recall notifications, though precision-recall matching to specific serial ranges may be limited.
